@ancestralwhispersdotorg: Facial reconstruction of a 4,600-year-old Yamnaya man from Orenburg. He was an elderly man, buried beneath a kurgan mound that reached up to 2.5 m in height and more than 50 m across. His skull, painted with ochre across the forehead and around the eyes, was well preserved, though the rest of the skeleton had been disturbed by ancient looting. Despite this, the burial retained rich ritual traces: ochre deeply permeated the soil, wooden structures once covered the grave, and animal bones, ceramics, and cremated remains were placed around him. The mound itself was a monumental construction. Its builders first raised a core of humus soil and turf blocks, then ringed it with a trench, and finally capped the platform with yellow clay, forming a domed, circular barrow. At its center stood a wooden post, likely a ritual marker. Later, across centuries, the mound was reused: in the mid–2nd millennium BC it was reentered by groups of the Volsk–Lbishchevo culture from the Middle Volga, and in the 1st millennium BC it became a burial place for early Sarmatians. #ancientdna #phenotype #anthropology #skull #yamnaya
