I was just 18 when I had my first baby. I new the basics on how to take care of a baby because I helped a lot with my siblings and cousins. My son was 6 months old when I graduated high school. I noticed he was a little delayed on sitting up and rolling over. I didn’t think nothing of it. I just kept working with him to get him to meet the milestones. I started to work with early intervention and they also noticed a delay in his milestones. At 2 years old my son still wasn’t talking and was just starting to crawl and pull him self up to stand. I didn’t no what I was doing so wrong. His pediatrician referred him to a neurologist they did some EEGs genetic testing. At age 3 they decided to do the Autism testing and sure enough it came back he had autism. I remember breaking down in the drs office crying and asking a bunch of questions. At one point I kept going over my pregnancy seeing if I did something wrong. The drs reassured me I did nothing wrong. I never new what my life was gana be like being a single first time mama to a special needs child. But here I am 16 years later and my son is in high school thriving. He has such a big heart. No matter how much he gets bullied and taunted by other kids he still has a big heart and would give someone his shirt off his back. I’m so proud of him and how much he has grown and over come.
