The managers are usually bullies and bullies keep bullies. I had managers bully me at the detriment of their company.

I think a higher-up will naturally want to promote someone who is willing to treat ppl below them poorly. having the ppl below them controlled & fighting amongst each other is ideal for them. I'm sure it's not necessarily true always. there are better bosses. my experience is that the ones who want to make meaningful changes & improvements for everyone involved, well... they aren't kept around long

i don't have answers. at times it seems like the sole purpose of my employment is to have someone there that can be bullied, gaslit, and abused. i'm not really there for my work product.

Do companies want empathetic leadership? If you want a manager that is willing to go along with screwing employees over behind their back, you might want the one who doesn't care about their coworkers. Also, bullies understand power, they understand the work place politics of what they need to do to get their boss promoted, etc. The powers that be are looking for the skill sets that get them ahead and often that isn't doing their current job well.

Because they do bully the workers, but then they completely kiss butt and show off to the people above them the end up, thinking that they are amazing people when really they’re just taking credit for other people
