They were actually labeled lazy on the plantation. It’s nothing new. The stereotype emerged during slavery, when slave owners characterized enslaved Black people as childlike, unintelligent, and lazy "Sambos". This depiction ignored the immense and backbreaking labor that enslaved people were forced to perform from sunrise to sunset and served to rationalize the institution of slavery and dehumanize its victims.
