“I WANT MOMMY! I DON’T WANT YOU!” When your child always wants you, it can be exhausting. Sometimes you need to work, rest, or simply have some time where nobody needs anything from you. And that is completely okay. You’re allowed to be unavailable sometimes. The problem comes when we don’t communicate that. Maybe you hired a nanny because you need help. She arrives and your child starts screaming, “I want Mommy!” while the nanny is left trying to carry them away and you stay silent. Or maybe you’re frustrated with your partner: “Why do I always have to do everything? Why don’t you just take her?” Imagine it from your child’s perspective. “I want Mommy. I don’t want you.” And the person they’re rejecting is now taking them away from Mommy. Don’t make Daddy or the nanny the person standing between your child and you. If you’re the one who isn’t available, communicate it yourself: “I know you want Mommy. But I’m going to rest now, so I’m not available. You’re going to stay with Daddy.” And then Daddy can take over: “I know. You really want Mommy. I want to be with Mommy too, but she’s resting right now. Come, let’s go together.” The same applies to a nanny: “I know you want Mommy. Mommy is working right now. Come with me.” Now the caregiver isn’t the reason Mommy is unavailable. They’re the person helping your child through the fact that Mommy isn’t available right now. It can feel uncomfortable to tell your child, “I’m going to rest, so I’m not going to be with you right now.” But taking time for yourself is not going to damage your relationship with your child. You don’t need your child to believe Mommy is always available and would always say yes if only Daddy or the nanny weren’t taking them away. Your relationship can handle a “not right now.” You can love your child and still need time away from them. You can acknowledge that they want you and still say no. And you can allow another caregiver to build a loving relationship with them without making that person responsible for separating you. If it’s your boundary, communicate it yourself. 🤍 #CoachMontessori #MontessoriParenting #RespectfulParenting #ParentingTips #ChildDevelopment
