I work next to a technician chasing flat rate times. he's knocking out more and more half hearted repairs. i refuse to cut corners.

Flat rate was great 20-30 years ago. It’s awful now. Between longer warranties, extended warranty companies that only pay warranty time, all the non productive time filing out paperwork, documenting shit with photos, standing at the parts counter, hunting down cars on the lot, and that’s not even mentioning how exponentially more complicated cars have become in the last 20-30 years. I left the industry after 10+ years because of flat rate. If they’d pay hourly plus OT I’d still be there today.

flat rate is pay to change a specific part like a water pump, wheel bearing etc.most flat rate times a good and if the person cant meet or beat the time, then they're not the good of a tech. where the system falls short is, places use it as a Bible. there are many instances where the time needs to be adjusted for vehicle conditions. the other place it falls short is, it is not for diagnostics, test drive or any other leg work involved in the repair.

they'd have to pay me over 100/hour to match my flat rate pay.. how would you explain that when they're only charging 160-200lhr shop rate.

flat rate is a chronic test of ethics to all involved. cut a corner or do it right? many great flat rate techs out there are unfortunately outnumbered by those that give in

Gross profit is all that matters in a dealership setting. They always say “we are here for the customer”. Thats BS. They don’t care about their customers and they damn sure don’t care about their techs. That’s why there’s a shortage in the industry. People are tired of it

What new techs have to remember that it’s more important to learn the brand and build skills before worrying about flagging hours. Problem is management always wants to fast track beginners to the line because it makes them more money. We also have toxic co workers that get into beginners ears and start planting toxic seeds. That’s why I keep my beginners hourly until I feel they are capable of being semi independent. That’s how I was brought up over 20 years ago and that’s how I want my beginners to learn. In the end it’s all about profits. I’ll keep it the way I have it as long as I can until upper management pushes for more profit.

I do primarily diesel at my GM dealer, EVERYTHING must be quoted/flagged under warranty times. Does not matter how old the vehicle is or how big the repair is. And wr get .7 diag for CP diagnostics 🙃

almost every shop I've worked in a hack will cheat the system and make more money than a tech that's been in the field many more years and can diagnose things instead of hanging parts. Flat rate promotes that.
