@annettereilly.for.real: The Harry Potter Experience in Stanley Park goes against the Park Board’s goals for inclusive and safe spaces for all Vancouverites. I’m not sure if it makes sense for someone living outside of the Vancouver area to call/email. I live in Chilliwack and have been going to the Stanley Park bright nights for many years because it benefits the burn victim unit. I’m curious why this Harry Potter venue was chosen over the Vancouver fire department event.

I’ve written in and encouraged my friends to do so as well! I got a ‘response’ that was basically ‘we’ll show this at a meeting’ and then they closed my ticket. I hope they actually do that! I love the parks here and it’s such a bummer that they’re promoting and financially supporting someone who hates us so much when there’s SO many other things they could’ve done instead.

Dear Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation,
I am writing to express my strong opposition to the “Harry Potter Experience” being hosted in Stanley Park.
This event directly profits J.K. Rowling, who has repeatedly used her platform to spread harmful rhetoric against transgender people. Vancouver is a city that has made commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Choosing to support an event that enriches someone so publicly aligned with transphobia runs directly counter to those commitments.
Additionally, Stanley Park is unceded Coast Salish territory. Allowing a commercial spectacle like this, which channels significant profit outside of the community, raises serious concerns about who truly benefits from the use of this land. From what I can see, it is not the Indigenous peoples whose land this is, nor the local queer and trans communities who are harmed by Rowling’s influence.
Public spaces in Vancouver should reflect values of respect, inclusivity, and reconciliation. Hosting an event that props up transphobia and funnels money to an already wealthy individual does the opposite.
I urge the Vancouver Park Board to reconsider this partnership and to establish clearer guidelines about the kinds of commercial events permitted on public land. Our parks should not be used to promote individuals or entities that cause real harm to marginalized communities.
