‘It is unfair to ask schools to undo what society has done.” As a former Georgia science teacher, I felt this in my soul.

Yup! Imagine walking into a higher-ranked school in Gwinnett County to inquire about their attendance zone and districting boundaries, only to be told, “WE DON’T DO APARTMENTS.” Excuse me? 😑 I asked for clarification, and the staff explained that the school’s attendance boundary does NOT include any apartment complexes. She said, “It’s just the lay of the land.” It’s more like the lay of redlining, and I’m very aware of that! I’m my daughter’s most important teacher, and she’ll be more than okay! Still, there’s a bigger issue here, and it’s saddening!

I was interested until the “no social safety net” comment. Tells me all I need to know.

It’s more than poverty. Poor white students consistently score far higher than wealthy black students

Cap the class sizes at 20! We have to do what we can control. Smaller class sizes is something we can control.

My favorite is the admin gaslighting of Hattie saying the teacher is the one factor that makes 100% of the difference while ignoring that things like anxiety have a negative .40 rating.

An after school reading program should be free to students that are not reading on grade level until scores improve. Reading is hard for students once they get behind. The focus should be on kinder through third if you catch it early the amount of time it will take to bring the student to grade level won’t be long. The problem is that reading below grade level isn’t a “problem” until a student is in 5th+ grade and reading three levels behind. The problem started way before then and no one did anything.

This is why it’s so freaking impressive when districts with high levels of poverty make huge gains in reading

Logically, being poor doesn’t prevent you from reading. So what specific things are, or are not, happening with reading in poor household that’s a roadblock to reading? Understanding this could reveal a path forward. Shaking a fist at society is fun, but is unlikely to yield any solutions. Also why is the standard closing the gap and not raising the floor? Lowering the top closes the gap, but isn’t a positive outcome.

This is a parenting problem! It doesn’t take money to get your kids ready for kindergarten. Talk to them, read to them and take away the damn phones. It can’t all be put on the teachers and the county.

Ok, wait what? There are actually schools with 100% failure rate? Are you sure you made this graph right?

I’m creating an advocacy training and talking about issues in education. Could I use this in my training? I’m trying to emphasize the underlying issue of poverty

My principal is trying to tell teachers we can’t read any books to the kids that aren’t in the curriculum. In elementary school. Nothing but text excerpts and three ancient novels we only read bits of.

It is unfair to ask school to undo what society has done. Wow!! This brilliantly speaks to all aspects of school and the implications it has.

I'm in a Title 1 school not too far south of you. We are not on any list, but we have been visited by district members in groups of 3-8. Everyone above the teachers are screaming that we are not doing enough.
I can't fight hunger and kids living unhoused. I can't fight when kids come to school with domestic violence keeping them awake at night, drugs in the home, or parents working 3 jobs to barely tread water.
