They happen every single year, and people build their lives around them. ⚡ CATATUMBO 🇻🇪 Where the Catatumbo River meets Lake Maracaibo, one small area receives around 250 lightning flashes per square kilometer every year, roughly 1.6 million bolts, the highest density on Earth. Storms occur up to 300 nights a year, lasting up to nine hours, with up to 28 strikes a minute at peak. The light is visible 40 kilometers away and was used by sailors as a navigation beacon for centuries. Around 20,000 fishers live beside it in stilt villages. In early 2010 it stopped for three months during a drought, and people feared it had gone out forever. 🌪️ TORNADO ALLEY 🇺🇸 The United States records around 1,200 tornadoes a year, more than the rest of the world combined, and this region sees roughly ten times more than anywhere else on the planet. It is the only place on Earth that regularly produces EF5 tornadoes, the strongest category that exists. 🌧️ MAWSYNRAM 🇮🇳 The wettest place on Earth, with around 11,870 millimeters of rain a year, about 467 inches, roughly thirteen times Seattle. Monsoon winds off the Bay of Bengal funnel straight into the Khasi Hills and dump everything on this one village. The rain on rooftops is so loud people shout to be heard. Umbrellas are useless, so locals wear knups, shields woven from bamboo and banana leaf. Bridges are grown from living tree roots because wood and metal rot within a few seasons. 🏜️ THE ATACAMA 🇨🇱 The driest place on Earth. The town of Quillagua averaged just 0.5 millimeters of rain per year between 1964 and 2001, and some weather stations in the desert have never recorded rainfall at all.
