Every empire begins with a small group of banded together peoples with common origins, goals, ideals and traditions. Typically rural, typically militaristic (or obsessive with art but particularly with art that glorifies heroism or masculinity or nature), typically highly religious and irrational. Then slowly we see a few trends that always lead to collapse. 1. Loss of the demographic origins. Foreign groups (could be ideologically or ethnically) come to incorporate themselves within this society, the original group loses the characteristics that gave it the empire building advantage, 2. religious devotion decreases, fundamental principles are questioned, sexuality is let loose, 3. The culmination of a society full of massively different individuals alongside massively different ideals (and ones that destroy self improvement in men) leads to a pathetically easy to conquer landscape.

So peace creates weak men who will either destroy themselves or someone else will. Yes this has happened many times and maybe not again in the U.S. since maybe Vietnam, but technology and money and travel anywhere from here to mars changes things. I don't think 100 olympians could take on Jeff bezos with all resources available.
