You’re missing the colorism/classist aspect rooted in Asian cultures that wasn’t influenced by US imperialism

I knew Hispanic people who hated being seen as Hispanic. One friend of mine was obsessed with being seen as white and he would force me to call him Robert when his real name was Roberto.

Wait does this explain “Oxford study” meme? Also for Latinos, it’s because most have a 60/40 split of Spanish and indigenous blood.

Also sadly this is very common across marginalized communities. You will always have the group that clings onto the hope that if they assimilate, they will be accepted, the ones who fight against it & are made an example of to others, & finally those who see that & become afraid to speak up themselves. Yt supremacy was multiple centuries in the making. The indoctrination runs deep. Realistically speaking, it takes many years or being over the edge to unite a people & get them to see the truth. We definitely need to do better though as it starts with us.

To add on to your point there are a huge number of Korean American adoptee who have been raised in majority whyt spaces and need to work through internalized and learned racism.

ALSO, the US and the Soviet Union essentially fought for control over the Koreas post WWII. People don’t understand the pro-US propaganda that was being forced down the throats of South Koreans bc the US was so scared of communism. Like helloooooooo it reeks of psychological programming

I also don’t think people realize Korea was a majority Buddhist country, but I’m pretty sure during the war/after a lot of missionaries came and converted a lot of people. The war tore Korea up and America took advantage of that. Another big one, eyelid surgery was introduced to Korea by a white surgeon.

thanks for this. as an adoptee I’d also like to point out that korean american adoptees were largely placed with white families and at least some of them (mine) chose to adopt from abroad bc of their own anti-Blackness, teaching that to us unfortunately

It is also reinforced by a ‘don’t stir up trouble, stay low’ mentality, which exemplifies racial accommodation.

there's a systematic way for Asian women to "become white". It's marrying a white man. During Japanese concentration camp days, A women married to yt men was completely exempted, whereas yt women married to A men was thrown into the camp despite not being Asian unless she divorce. So A women and yt women essentially trade place simply due to who they marry. It's systematic.

i think this parallels the Vietnamese community here in the states and why a lot of viet ppl, in America, are conservative/trumpers. (IM NOT DEFENDING THEM, just context). America goes to terrorize & disrupt these countries. They sell the propaganda of “ur doing bad bc ur country is corrupt, but we aren’t” to these citizens. Those that buy it come to America and believe + push the same rhetoric. They think they can achieve the American Dream and look down on their home countries too!! “Those poor ppl living in Vietnam” when most Vietnamese ppl have a better quality of life than those of us here but they won’t believe it because of all the “America is Amazing” propaganda. Thankful that things are changing little by little in the American viet diaspora with younger ones getting educated but OOF… It’s a long road

There is similar in the Philippines for the sane reasons with colonialism and military instillations where men used local women to find a subservient wife. Me being white passing half filipina my whiteness was complimented all my life by my Filipina family circle but it made me uncomfortable and felt like an outsider.
