I've not known any military force that signals with a cap or touching their nose is to "take a shot", probably in the movies yeah😂

I've seen a video taken by someone on a roof and you can tell it was long range by the bang and crack of it, everyone's heads whipped round in the same direction. Whoever did this had some experience at range.
