The caves were so vast and labyrinthine that she got lost. Her uncle, searching for her, called out, "Tamar, where are you?" ​From the depths of the caves, the young Tamar's voice echoed back, "Ak var, dzia!" which in Georgian means, "I am here, uncle!" ​When King Giorgi III heard this exchange, he was so moved by his daughter's words that he decided to name the entire cave complex "Vardzia." ​While this is the most well-known legend, the history of Vardzia is deeply rooted in fact. It was a major construction project of the Georgian Golden Age, started by King Giorgi III and completed by his daughter, Queen Tamar.
