research and development. people think that every engineering job is R& D. if you want a job in r&D, making new things that have never existed before, then get a job in r&D. if you go to work for an automotive company, you're likely going to be working in manufacturing or some kind of coordination

I think it’s because automotive sector is a pseudo utility funded by tax payers. They become complacent and don’t perform as intended. Add also questionable EPA regulations.

lmao sounds like y'all worked at the wrong companies or at least in the wrong areas. I can assure you companies do design their own engines. Transmissions and axels on the other hand often do get outsourced to suppliers

100% true. I work at an OEM on the service training side, and our engineers essentially build a massive technical document that says how a computer or system should work on a car, what their data inputs will be and outputs should be controlled, what DTCs should set and when they should set, then start a contract and hand that off to a supplier like Bosch, Continental, Valeo, etc, and have them program or build the components.

Agreed. Saw this in my engineering internship and it seemed more like documentation and logistical work. I’m happier as a sales engineer in the HVAC industry where I am actually able at times to design and troubleshoot systems.

Not only do they not do it anymore typically they also don’t know how to design it themselves anymore. They often only understand parts of how the components and processes integrate and where they are going to exist in the end product. It becomes very difficult to get the data you need to know to help them actually make them work and work properly currently.

Yo, this is architecture in a nutshell. Most things are designed by a designer that doesn't understand how to build their own designs, then hand it to an architect of record then ask for money.

Not every company is like this. Only very large ones. If you want real designing, take a pay cut and work for a smaller company. The environment is amazing as an engineer.

That’s just a function of how organizations scale. In bigger orgs, complexity and risk is much higher. Building everything in house was not efficient (although that might change with ai). That’s why it gets outsourced.

My former company was buying whole machines from China and just rebranding them, they had to remove “made in the USA “ from our merchandise. 😭😭😭
