That “there’s something stuck in my throat” feeling is one of the most common things people come to ENT with. And interestingly, in many cases, when we actually examine the throat… there’s no physical lump sitting there. We call this globus sensation. Patients usually describe it as: – tightness – pressure/fullness – something “stuck” – repeated swallowing – or constant throat clearing Now the important part is understanding WHY it happens, because the throat is extremely sensitive to irritation. ⭐ One of the biggest causes is silent reflux (LPR) Unlike classic acid reflux, this doesn’t always cause obvious heartburn. Instead, tiny amounts of reflux repeatedly irritate the throat and voice box, creating chronic throat awareness. --- ⭐ Post-nasal drip and allergies are another major trigger Mucous sitting around the back of the throat from allergies, sinus inflammation, or chronic rhinitis can make people constantly aware of the sensation. --- ⭐ Throat clearing itself becomes part of the cycle The vocal cords repeatedly slam together every time you clear your throat. That creates more inflammation → more irritation → more throat awareness. --- ⭐ Stress and anxiety affect the throat more than people realise Not because the symptoms are “imaginary”, but because the muscles around the throat and larynx physically tighten under stress. We see this very commonly in clinic. --- ⭐ Mouth breathing and dryness can worsen symptoms significantly People with nasal blockage, allergies, snoring, or poor airflow often wake up with a dry, irritated throat, which makes every sensation feel amplified. --- ⭐ Most globus sensation is benign But symptoms like: – difficulty swallowing – pain – voice changes – neck lumps – coughing blood – unexplained weight loss should always be properly assessed. Because the goal is not just suppressing the sensation temporarily. It’s understanding what keeps irritating the throat in the first place. #ENTdoctor #globussensation #throatproblems #silentreflux #healthtips
