@dr_inna: Before there was “superior neurodivergent pattern recognition,” there was “depression is when you understand reality.”

Critical thinking isn’t really taught in the US.

I think depression has too wide of a differential for any single thing to cause it, which is why findings are so mixed

Finding out depressive realism isn’t a thing makes me sad. I was perfectly happy thinking it was a real effect.

My therapist and I started tracking my "predictions" when I was super depressed and I turned out to be wrong often enough to decide it was worth it to put more effort into not being such a bummer anymore. I can't speak for anyone else, but believing that I was just being "realistic" was a huge barrier to my progress.

I dunno. When I'm depressed, my thinking skills seem blunted.

I think of you every single time I scroll past a video that goes, “According to psychology…” 😂 & there are just too many to tag you in lol.

keep seeing this "depressive realism" stuff and it just sounds like pure nihilism being packaged as some inescapable objective truth which had me rolling my eyes so hard

philosophy and psychology are very interlinked, but that also gives way for confusion and pseudo science if one does not accurately grasp the neuroscience side of it. though some philosophical sentiments feel very validating, it's best to think critically about the scientific "proof" given, as it may not accurately reflect how diverse our brains are and how we can manage symptoms of these states.

My understanding is depressive realism is basically a depressed nihilist. People believe nihilists are pessimistic, and that is far from the truth.

Love this! People have been far too enamored with media tropes like the “cynical/pessimistic genius” and genuinely believe that having a poor outlook in life is to sober and aware

oh wow. never seen this myth debunked before. my experience is that depression can make me more realistic, and it can shut out a lot of naivety about the world, but at the same time, it exaggerated the bad stuff. it feels dangerous to tell depressed people that they think more rationally, it'll lead them to thinking that everyone DOES in fact hate them etc.

Yes depression causes cognitive impairments but impairments aren’t normally the thing leading them there. I don’t even understand your debunking, even disregarding the so called “reality” of life the mere inescapable reality of aging and mortality is a form of depressive realism which I’m not even sure could be debunked.
