Lets talk “complicated grief.” and how i treat it in sessions 👇👇👇 Remember these are used in the safety of fhe therapy room after rapport and trust in built. (Mute rather than pause🤍) Number one way I treat complicated grief: I prioritize patience and space for the client's emotions. The duration of grief is deeply personal and varies person to person. Often, the prolongation of grief stems from self-denial of the intense feeling of grief. Clients sometimes feel shame and embarrassment for "still caring," leading to a superficial acknowledgment of sadness without allowing the depth of grief to be felt. They might seek immediate relief, urging their therapist to "fix" their grief. My strategy diverges from attempting to fix the grief. Instead, I choose to explore it with them. This exploration allows clients to fully experience their grief, acknowledging and accepting the depth of their emotions without judgment. It is within this process of exploration and acknowledgment that grief, once fully felt and understood, begins to transform!! Allowing grief to move through this natural progression, rather than hastening its resolution, fosters a healthy relationship to loss. The paragraph above is how I HUMAN BE- with my clients below is how I HUMAN-DO which includes exercises: Gestalt Exercises 1. The Empty Chair Technique: I have them imagine their ex sitting in an empty chair in front of them and say whatever they wish they could say to their ex. 🪑 2. Two-Chair Technique: 🪑🪑 In this exercise, the client alternates between two chairs, representing different parts of themselves (e.g., the part that wants to move on vs. the part still attached). 3. Completion Tasks: such as writing a letter to their ex that they don’t actually send. 4. Identify the Parts: Help the client identify different parts involved in their grief, such as parts that are hurt, angry, or seeking closure, as well as parts trying to protect them from pain (e.g., by avoiding reminders of the ex). 1. Mindfulness Exercises: Loving-Kindness Meditation (Metta): Meditation that focuses on love and kindness towards themselves AND their ex! It can be powerful in reducing feelings of bitterness and enhancing forgiveness. (Not with abusive or toxic exes) Grief is something we all go through. It’s okay if we don’t have an easy time processing the hardest human emotion. #breakups #grief #breakup #relationships
