@tilscience: The internet just got a major upgrade in a really cool way After 40 years of the same fiber optic technology, scientists just cracked the code on making the internet potentially dramatically faster, by sending data through thin air! A company called Lumenisity created hollow glass ‘straws’ that send data through air instead of solid glass. The result? Light travels 45% faster, cables can handle 1000x more power. These hollow fibers can even support quantum communication systems, opening up possibilities we’re only beginning to understand. This could be the next era of the internet #Science #internet #wifi #technology
Aaaand Lumenisity has already been acquired by Microsoft

it will not be adopted. the work needed to replace the cable infrastructure would be massive.

What's the point of faster internet if most of the data we access is still stored on hdds

Light travels 40% faster through air than glass? I feel like that flies in the face of everything else I've ever heard?

She says nothing about how brittle glass is. How is this going around curves without breaking and mixing up all the signals??

I feel like speed of light is low on the list of bottlenecks for internet speed. Wouldn’t there be more significant factors?

Pushing back a bit on the speed of light being 45% faster in air. While true, it’s kinda irrelevant. This is changing latency from like 33ms to like 22ms. The difference would be negligible. The bandwidth would stay the same.
