@ek_editing: If your MMC only loves her because she’s “not like other women,” that’s not romance—it’s lazy writing. Build chemistry through real traits, not comparisons. Readers want swoons, not shade. #romance #writing #writer #writertok #authortok
Not only that but it fetishizes women in that “manic pixie dream girl” trope and it’s not only insulting to the other women in the book but it’s insulting to the fmc as well.

She wasn't like the other girls...her head was large, and round, and her eight arms were long and flexible, and when she looked at me with those powerful slits for eyes I realized she was an octopus.

Okay but if it’s a romance novel I fear the problem is that “You are just like every woman I’ve ever met, irresistible” doesn’t hit as hard?

Personally feel like that line is only a negative if it generalized and it can be fixed with a simple "I know", "He knows" or "He knew" followed by the why she's not like the others. That way its not as generalized to all women, just the women in that man's life due to class or upbringing and not gender stereotypes. For example if it's a country boy and city girl romance story, the line is almost expected, but it's not becuse she's less of a woman, but possibly more feminine than what he is accustomed to, and that is what attracts him.

ah, done! no matter what I do my male main character always falls in love with another male character. Even when I have the female love interest so set up!

My MMC fell in love with her spirit, the way she makes him laugh and the way her life experiences makes him think about the world different. It’s not that she’s “different from other women” it’s bc she comes from a different walk of life from everyone he’s used to

YES PLEASE!!! God this is something that always bothers me in media. it's so overused, and just makes me so sad to see. you can't just strip individuality from ALL WOMEN so that ONE can be attractive. tell us why she's attractive to HIM. why he see her specifically, why she's made for HIM why they're compatible. I get it if you're distancing the characters opinion from your own, but I'm okay without a character who is likable for being "not like other guys/girls" tell me why I like them. not why I dislike the rest of the world lol
