A common theme among Western authors is that the Romans and Persians were weak and on the verge of collapse before the Arabs entered and conquered Persia and most of the Byzantine Empire. 1. The Arabs were embroiled in a devastating civil war (the Ridda Wars) and needed immediate reorganization before the conquests. Abu Bakr (may God be pleased with him) initially ordered that the apostate tribes not participate in the early conquests until Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) allowed them to participate in the Battle of Qadisiyah due to the Muslims' need for fighters. 3. The Romans enjoyed greater peace under the reign of Emperor Heraclius. 4. The Romans and Sasanids allied and were defeated at the Battle of Peraz. 5. A series of great Arab victories against their more numerous, better-equipped, better-organized, and more experienced enemies. Within a few decades, Anbasah al-Kalbi was marching towards Paris, al-Saffah had triumphed over the Tang Empire, Marwan II had defeated the Khazars on the Volga River in the heart of Russia, and Muhammad al-Thaqafi had conquered Sindh and Punjab. In my opinion, the Arab victory was a historic one, unparalleled to this day.
