The Early Childhood Development Feeding Programme has been extended to the early childhood centres in the Otjozondjupa Region to fight hunger and improve learning outcomes among the youngest learners. The Ministries of Education and Gender Equality, as well as the World Food Programme, hosted a sensitisation meeting to prepare for the rollout of the programme to ECD centres. Unlike children in primary schools, the younger ones in daycares and kindergartens will be receiving fortified instant porridge in a quest to introduce healthier diets for them. "What we do in the Otjozondjupa should encourage others to do better, but you should also petition the government to pump funds or to solicit funds so that we have this programme going on because we do not want it to be a one-off thing; we want to make it a continuous programme because hunger is not a one-off continuous event in that way," says Theofilus Nuugulu, Head of ECD Feeding Programme Delegation. He stressed that the food should not be politicised, since it's an election year, and must be consumed at the centres – not taken home. Nuugulu added that the success of the ECD Feeding Programme depends on transparency and cooperation among all stakeholders. Otjozondjupa Governor John ||Khamuseb is tasked with ensuring that the ECD food reaches all corners of the region. ||Kamuseb therefore calls on stakeholders to also ensure accountability. "And then I will also go work in close proximity with the implementers, and I will do spot checks since I am a teacher by profession. Education is closer to my heart." Some ECD centres in Otjiwarongo already received their portions, and parents welcomed the initiative. The programme is supported by the European Union to ensure that no child stays at home because of hunger.
