This week, Charleston County Council considered whether to accept a grant from the Department of Homeland Security. Concerns were raised about whether the grant came with strings attached that required Charleston County to provide additional support to ICE. In response to the events in Minneapolis, Charleston County citizens spoke out during the public comment period of the County Council meeting, asking for greater transparency about whether the grant required Charleston County to provide additional cooperation with ICE or otherwise obligated Charleston to perform additional work on immigration. These are a few of the 14 speakers who spoke out against working with ICE. Charleston County officials insisted the grant did not obligate the county to work on immigration or provide additional cooperation with ICE and that the grant only involved Hazard Materials clean up. We hope they are correct and support keeping first responders safe when cleaning up dangerous materials. County Council approved the grant funding over public requests for additional time to consider the strings attached to the funding and calls for more transparency.
