His Owners Claimed He Was “Just Born Like That,” But This 5-Month-Old Puppy Was The Victim Of Horrific Physical Trauma... When we first met 5-month-old puppy Clay, he lived in his owners’ dark garage. He was so terrified of people that he urinated when we walked through the doorway. His back end was covered in open sores from dragging his paralyzed hind legs along the ground. His owners claimed he was born like this—but we quickly learned this wasn’t the truth. Clay entered our care, and we rushed him right to the vet, where pain management medication was immediately administered. X-rays revealed that Clay had a fractured pelvis and a broken femur. Even worse, his spine had begun to curve from spending so much time dragging himself along on his left side. The damage to Clay’s body is extensive, but thanks to his young age, not entirely beyond repair. First, we are going to try every day to get him up on his feet as much as possible, making sure his hips and legs are in the right position. Once’s he a bit stronger, he will begin rigorous physical therapy to retrain his muscles. We are hopeful that with this treatment, Clay will be able to walk on his own again. However, he will still need surgery to remove the stray bone fragments. Clay’s body will always be a little different, but he will not suffer forever. With your help, we can restore his independence and give him a chance at the happy life he was always meant to have.
