🍂 HALLOWEEN DRESS UP 🍂 Most people think of Halloween as an American tradition, however it's origin is much more ancient and can be traced back to the Celtic festival of Samhain/Calan Gaeaf/Kalan Gwav, which is a festival marking the beginning of winter, the Celtic New Year and is a celebration of the dead. It was (and for many still is!) A night where the veil between worlds in thin, and spirits would wander the earth once more. It was a night where you could sense that the world belongs to something else. The Celtic Druids believed that one of the doorways these spirits would walk through lay in Neolithic burial chambers and passage tombs, and would hold ceremonies at these sites. To protect and mask themselves from any evil spirits which may be passing, they altered their appearance into ghastly and ghoulish figures. Other traditions involved lighting large communal bonfires, the embers of which were used to reignite individual hearths to symbolically welcome in the new year. Plates of food were also left out at dinner tables for souls of dead kin who may come back to visit. Community feasts were held, and any bones of animals eaten during this feast were tossed into the fire. These Samhain traditions were then carried by Irish immigrants across the seas to America, where Samhain became All Hallows-eve and transformed into the modern festival we know today. One of the ancient traditions was the Druidic act of masking and altering appearances, which is why, to this day, we dress up on Halloween. . . . . #halloween #halloweendressup #samhain #celticfestival #celticcelebration #celticnewyear #calangaeaf #druidicceremony #festivalofthedead #spirits #ghosts #ghouls #goblins #witches #kalangwav #winter #dressingup #druids #ireland #Wales #Scotland #cornwall #brittany #celticnations #celtictraditions #halloweenorigin #Halloween #burialchambers #sacredsites #witchtok #hedgewitch #greenwitch #ghosts #witches #goblins #supernatural #newyear #ancientfestivals
