The Coconut That Saved A Future President On the night of August 2nd, 1943, a Japanese destroyer sliced through a small American patrol boat in the Solomon Islands. The boat was PT-109, and its commander was a 26-year-old lieutenant named John F. Kennedy, two decades before he became president. The collision cut the boat in half and left the survivors clinging to the wreckage in the dark. Kennedy, who suffered from a chronic back condition that had nearly kept him out of the navy altogether, gathered his men and decided to swim for a distant speck of land around three miles away. One crewman, Patrick McMahon, was too badly burned to swim, so Kennedy gripped the strap of the man’s life jacket between his teeth and towed him the entire way, a swim that took roughly four hours. On the tiny island there was no food and no fresh water, so Kennedy swam back out into the channel on later nights hoping to signal a passing vessel. Rescue finally came through two Solomon Islanders, Biuku Gasa and Eroni Kumana, who paddled a canoe out to them. With no paper, Kennedy carved a message into the husk of a coconut and handed it over, and they carried it 35 miles through enemy waters to an Allied base.
