The judge in next month's trial over rapper Tupac Shakur's 1996 murder in Las Vegas said Tuesday that she expects "multiple days of large panels" for jury selection and "probably a lot of people that maybe ultimately cannot be fair in the situation." Judge Carli Kierny said some potential jurors likely "are excused because of their either knowledge or interest in the case, or, you know, some sort of issue with that." "I think we're all kind of aware of it," said Kierny, who presides in Nevada's 8th Judicial District. Kierny was responding to comments from Duane “Keffe D” Davis' lawyer Michael Sanft, who said he dined with a 73-year-old Brigham Young University professor who knew who Tupac was. "So I think we're going to get the same problem. Everyone at some point will raise their hand because they're going to be familiar with something to do with this particular trial, whether it's his music, whether it's some of the other individuals that would be named by the state as potential witnesses in this case," Sanft said. Kierny said they'll question people individually when they "raise their hands and they've heard about it." Davis was in court on Tuesday (June 30) for the pre-trial hearing. His trial is to begin August 10 in Kierny's courtroom at the Regional Justice Center in downtown Las Vegas. Davis is accused of organizing the fatal shooting as part of a feud between the South Side Crips and the Mob Piru gang, which was linked to the Bloods, and as retaliation for a fight involving Davis’ nephew Orlando Anderson, Shakur and Death Row Records CEO Marion “Suge” Knight, who was injured in the shooting. Prosecutors say Davis was a Crips shot caller and the Mob Piru gang was associated with Death Row Records. #law #court #crime #hiphop
