@mermaid.liveaboards: Bargibant’s pygmy seahorse (Hippocampus bargibanti) is one of the smallest seahorse species in the world, growing up to about 2.4 cm (0.94 inches) in length. It is a master of camouflage, living exclusively on gorgonian sea fans (Muricella species), with its body color and rounded tubercles closely matching the coral’s color and texture—typically purple with pink tubercles or yellow with orange tubercles, depending on the host coral. This tiny seahorse anchors itself by wrapping its prehensile tail around the coral branches and often forms small colonies of up to 20 individuals on a single fan. Its diet consists of tiny food particles carried by currents or trapped by the coral branches, as its small snout limits it to consuming only very small prey. Reproduction involves the female depositing eggs into the male’s brood pouch, where he carries them until fully developed offspring are born. Discovered only in 1969 by Georges Bargibant, this species is highly sensitive to environmental disturbances and requires careful protection of its coral habitat to ensure its survival.
