plenty of us new age brewers would be happy with wood casks but poor pub cellar management,wood cost and ofcourse beer tax kills it for us

Without the natual wood there's a subtle quality that's missing that can't be quantified by any instrument. (Just like soda pop in glass bottles, authentic pizza dough proofed in old wooden trays (or soughdough with wooden implements).
