Facts on facts on facts. I’m the first liberal/leftist in my family. A lot of my yt friends are also the first in their families. As for Dean, you hit the nail on the head. It’s all about the gotcha. That’s why whenever we’re in the streets marching, he and Parker are on live debating. They haven’t put any skin in the game.

As a first generation liberal white person and blue dot, I agree with much of what you said. And I agree that Dean and Parker are not the leaders we need right now. But personally, I don’t see them as leaders, I see them as kids trying to reach other kids in their age group with similar backgrounds, modeling themselves (somewhat) after Kirk. Dean also knew Kirk personally, and Parker was present at the Kirk event. I think it’s fair to have some kind of response when you know the individual personally. And since (whether they want to admit it or not) they probably see themselves becoming the liberal versions of Kirk over the next decade, seeing Kirk get shot makes them think - what if? So a reaction of some kind is fair for kids to have. That said - even before yesterday - I agree they aren’t the leaders we need right now. I also don’t think they’re being followed the way you seem to. They’re entertaining, but I certainly don’t take my lead from them…

They’re more focused on their future political careers when they hit the age than they are being actual movement makers. Where’s the starting foundations? Types of legislation that they want to create? Where’s the action of the debates?. All the money gathering, the “gotcha”, the making sure to show empathy, recognizable face, being young men capable of showing emotion which gets many women to support etc. it’s to be “palatable” across the board.

I thought this same thing about Ezra Klein’s mask off op-Ed on Kirk. It was all just word games for him. Ezra lost a debate partner. And he’s sad about it. He doesn’t love anyone who he sees as being affected by the stochastic terrorism Kirk spread. It was an intellectual exercise all along. No one “real” to Klein was ever being hurt. Just game pieces on the board of his favorite game of “public intellectual.”

Yes. My parents are maga, I had to stop talking to them. A lot of us white folks are struggling to break ties with family and friends. There could be some leaders but it’s going to be more rare because we’ve been raised to be quiet, keep the peace, let grandma have her views, we can agree to disagree and so on. Some of us are done with that crap and need to get mad and break ties. White people are in crisis honestly. That anger is where a lot of us need to be so that we start a new and get away from racism. So many of us were born in it and didint have someone to tell us we had privilege. Keep working with white folks trying to get away from this crap, some of us are going it without family now.
