@hvacknowitall: Don't miss this one... The know it alls on FB told me a megger is not used for this purpose and I'm a hack. Well here it is in living color, a megger is not just for checking motors and compressors. Its purpose is to test insulation integrity, any wire can be tested but please avoid anything attached to electronics. I actually started using this trick initially with the @supco_hvac M500 and realized how many problems you can find, for example: carbon tracking. On this test I'm using the @klein_tools ET600. #hvac #hvactroublshooting #hvactraining #hvacelectrician #hvacelectrical

I agree with your recommendation about the megger test . I recall one time petrochemical plant in Saudi and Im Saudi asked me to attend investigation about them GE Gas turbine trips after one day of operation for many trials I asked to do Megger test for tge SOV cable to fuel gas valve and finally found this cable was high temp exposed to the cable replaced back ok

so i was always taught not to turn it above the insulation rating of the wire your testing.Anybody have an opinion on that

Great video! Are you able to use the Megger on smaller gauge wires ? Like low voltage wire for instance ?

I honestly don’t know how people work without a megger, I see so many videos and situations of people just jamming in fuses without checking it with a megger and blaming it on “power bumps”. I’ve found so many shorts that I would have otherwise not found with my regular meter.

Good information but I would refer to it as insulation resistance testing.. megger is a brand and some newbies should learn proper terminology for their proper advantage

Any chance you heard it “popping” while you were doing the test?
