3. still trying to figure this out lol. but i think taking breaks while studying is huge! being mindful of your time and knowing that it’s okay to not be super confident in everything that you’re expected to memorize and learn and to make time for things that keep you sane! i personally walk my dog, go to pilates, hangout with friends and family

Q5: As a low GPA-applicant, I feel like my experiences helped a lot! I had small animal, large animal, emergency, exotics, research, and zoo hours! The main thing is that I was always willing to try new things, even if it wasn’t something I was particularly interested in!

I only applied to Texas A&M! I chose this school because they are personally close to home and they have a 99% NAVLE pass rate the past 2 years. They are building a new small animal hospital and our class will be the first class to use it. You also get a HUGE rep for being an Aggie vet 🥰

2nd yr student at MsState here! 1. I am from SC, which at the time had contract seats at other schools, which is why I applied to MsState and also just love the school so much!! 2. You get used to the crazy schedule and it just becomes second nature, once I get back into routine I typically will have time to go to gym, bible study, hang out with friends, go to football games etc! 3. Stress - I do things that I love which are read, workout, and my friends at school help so much! 4. Emergency/mixed animal practice - I fell in love with food animal in undergrad but I have a lot of small animal experience so I would love to do both, I love the chaos of emergency and solving puzzles 5. Research, I had a lot of different experiences with different species which I think made me stand out?? Idk haha

Honestly for Q1, I ended up applying to my in-state only but was planning to apply to neighboring states- I wanted to be close to home. But depending on personal stats I think that’s something that needs to be considered as well! Q2… uh you kind just do LOL my go to quote is if you want to you will, so I find breaks between exams and give myself the day off from studying. It’s doable, but be realistic it will not look the same as it did in undergrad! Q3: I haven’t gotten burnt out (yet), however stress lingers all the time, back to Q2, I balance that with still making time for myself when I have the chance between exams/light scheduled days and you get a bit “desensitized” to how much you’re doing. It becomes normal in a way Q4: I came in wanting to do access to care/shelter, it’s still an interest of mine however, I can see myself doing ER after working in the ICU and love surgery in general. Q5: I think my “unique” experience came in my access to care work, I got to be a tech for a nonprofit that worked to care for animals that belonged to homeless/low income individuals and really made a lasting impact on me and the community!

Q1: I applied to vet school after only doing 2 years of undergrad and I didn’t have a lot of credits from highschool that transfered in. I was only eligible to apply to a few schools because of this. I only applied to two schools (my instate and one that was drivable from home) and was fortunate enough to get into both. Ultimately, went with my instate for the cost.

Q1: It was always recommended to me to apply to your in state school especially if there are tuition differences so I applied here at LSU. Tuskegee was another choice of mine simply because I am African American and it is an HBCU so that was a no brainer. The other two schools were those that I added just to be on the safe side, but not spend too much money either (Ohio state and Virginia Maryland). Q2:For most people if you’re going into this field, it has been your passion for a while so you wont let yourself drown if you truly want it just because your passion will drive you to stay afloat BUT at the end of the day, this will be my career not my life so I always take a day to myself on the weekend. Q3: managing stress comes with you not comparing yourself to others, taking it little by little everyday, and understanding that you are a student for a reason and if you knew everything then you would already be a doctor

#1: I picked three programs I was interested in (aka my in state, two 2+2 programs: in state for money reasons and the other two were because I was interested in a 2+2 set up) and tailored my undergraduate classes to their prerequisites then ngl when doing VMACS I just chose two more programs that match my prerequisites. #2-3 honestly haven’t really figured these two out yet, but just find a good support system. #4 Therio or exotics. I’m interested in therio because I am obsessed with genetics and reproduction. #5. I did about 60ish hours with an ophthalmologist. Not only was this the most helpful experience for admissions, but it helped me out a lot. First of all I learned that I didn’t want to touch eyes if I couldn’t help it lol, and second of all it made me want to specialize.

Q2: combining different parts of my life! I’d pair studying with my friends with going out to dinner or playing volleyball with them after. Even just studying with friends makes it so much easier to feel like I’m still pouring into my relationships and personal life

1) I scheduled calls with admissions advisors to see if I would be a good fit for their program/if they would be a good fit for me! 2) I treat school like a job. Clock in, clock out. Outside of study time/class my life is my own! 3) Wish I had an answer for this one, my hair is literally falling out. BUT I would recommend the free resources your university provides! 4) GP, shelter med, mixed. I want to do everything!! I love internal medicine, but I know residency isn’t for me, so I can get my fix by managing cases in a GP setting with the bounds of what I’m comfortable/capable of. I also love giving back to my community, service is a huge part of my foundation in vet med. Shelter med is a great side gig for a lot of vet students to get great experience!

2. i think it’s helpful when you plan ahead! i make a study schedule for each exam so i know what i need to get done each day and so that im not cramming a few days before. this breaks up my studying so that i can do other things on my weekends or during the week (i plan these out too/block out time for non vet med things)

5. i think i had a lot of non animal/vet experiences that showed that i was a person with other passions and interests outside of vet med! one of my biggest interests is mentoring/teaching others so a lot of my experiences showed that (animal science peer advisor, gen chem TA, elementary school volunteer, etc) i also had experiences working with many diff types of animals which i think helps you figure out what you like but it also shows admissions that you’ve done your research on the different fields in vet med (i’ve worked with wildlife in costa rica, dogs and cats in GP/speciality, large animals/livestock, tortoises, etc). i think going to an undergrad that provides a lot of animal handling experiences can be super helpful with this too!

Q5: I think me being so well rounded was what was the most valuable. If you are a student who doesn’t have a lot of clinical hours, making that up with internship, clubs, school organizations, research, etc makes up for that. Remember that it is a wholistic review of the application. Of course you still need the minimum requirement of clinic and animal hours for whatever school you apply to but it is not end all be all

Q4: I am interested in small animal surgery but I also like food animal so im not sure. I did an internship at UC Davis SVM and liked the surgery specialty rotation. Food animal stems from working on a farm at my undergrad

1. location was super important to me since i cannot do the cold haha and i wanted to be close to family! also tuition played a huge role since i did not want to be in 5x more debt if i could avoid it. and if i could genuinely see myself happy living/going to school there for 4 years!

Ross student here! 1. I picked schools based on three reasons: one being cost (so obviously applied to my state school), location (2 of the schools were in near states), and reviews ( talked to ppl who attended these schools and asked their opinion on them). 2. Honestly, I still haven’t made the best balance of everything, but the biggest thing I’ve been doing is planning!! Have all of your studying time set out, schedule time with friends, or even use studying as a way to hangout like going over bones/muscles in the lab. 3. I definitely think burnout is a big thing here due to there being summer breaks (you have a 2 week break between semesters), but it all kind of goes back to planning. Make sure you make time for yourself and I also like to join clubs that do fun things like painting or helping out with our kennel dogs. 4. My main interest right now would be emergency small animal. Prior to coming to my school, I worked at UF’s emergency hospital and I love how much critical thinking was used and the speed of everything was also thrilling. 5. I do think my experience at UF was the most valuable as it was constant interaction between the different specialties, residents, and veterinary students. Plus, the things that came into the emergency were not commonly seen in GP. Plus, there are residents/ Faculty doctors that are on boards of many school admissions, so it gave me the opportunity to show my passion for the field and let them see how invested I am. Plus my position (veterinary assistant) can be applied to without much experience, BUT YOU MUST BE OPEN TO LEARNING!!
