The funny thing is that when me and my friends watched the movie in the 80s/90s we didnt need and explanation to their friendship. The story was that way and we never questioned the internal logic of the movies I think today that feeling and that kind of acceptance is lost and everything is overexplained. Studios and audiences dont let the things be. There must be a reason and justification for absolutely everything what makes everything way more long and boring. There is no sense of wonder like in for example Buckaroo Banzai Who is Buckaroo? How is that he is a doctor and a music and an adventurer? Who are the Hong Kong chavaliers? Where do they come from? How did they met? What is the 8th dimension? Why all the aliens are named Paul?...Who cares? They are a bunch of amazing characters on an amazing adventure. Who needs more?

Back in the 80s it wasn’t that unusual for kids in the suburbs to be friends with their neighbours. I used to visit an elderly neighbour and help feed her pet birds. The Breaking Bad origin wasn’t really necessary at the time imo.

I don't think this explains how they met. How did Doc know that Marty would be a kid that would sell illicit products? How did he approach Marty with this idea?

In the very beginning of the movie, Marty is playing guitar on the crazy speaker set up that Doc Brown had. So I would assume it is just a friendship that Marty is taking advantage of to get access to a sick sound system.

I always assumed it was a paradox loop, where Marty and Docs encounter in the 1950s caused Doc to make sure that the two of them would meet years later to ensure Marty goes back in time to show him the DeLorean and how it works 🔁

I always just assumed when Marty was younger he would go over to mow his lawn for some pocket change and Marty took an interest in docs inventions

I assumed Marty was basically hired to help out this old man. Like, pick up his groceries, sweep his floors. I did that a bit when I was a teen.

The telltale game explains that doc brown was the local mad scientist and Marty being adventurous and curious helped him out in his lab and bob gale worked on the story for the game
