The Toyota Supra is gearing up for a monster comeback that could make BMW jealous. Japanese automotive outlet Best Car Web reports that Toyota's next-generation Supra will pack over 500 horsepower—a massive jump from the current 382 horsepower—and it won't need any German help to get there. Toyota is ditching its BMW partnership completely. Instead of the current BMW-sourced 3.0-liter inline-six, the new Supra will get a Toyota-engineered 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor. The hybrid setup positions the electric motor behind the driver and passenger seats, creating a rear-mid-mounted configuration that should improve weight distribution. The power boost is substantial—we're talking about adding more than 118 horsepower over the current model. Toyota isn't just focusing on straight-line speed either. The new Supra will offer both a 6-speed manual transmission for purists and an 8-speed automatic for those who want maximum performance without the clutch work. This represents a huge shift for Toyota, who partnered with BMW in 2019 to revive the Supra nameplate after a 17-year hiatus. The collaboration worked—the Supra has sold over 24,000 units compared to BMW's Z4 with just 13,000 sales. But Toyota's Gazoo Racing division apparently learned enough to go it alone for the sixth generation. The timing makes sense too. Current Supra production wraps up in late 2025 with the Final Edition, which already bumps power to 435 horsepower in some markets. The new model should debut around 2027, giving Toyota enough time to develop their hybrid system and establish the manufacturing infrastructure. What's really exciting is that Toyota might also consider a Mazda inline-six option, potentially sharing development costs with Mazda's rumored next RX sports car. But the hybrid four-cylinder seems to be the front-runner since it's lighter, more fuel-efficient, and delivers the power numbers Toyota wants.
