Accessibility for the disabled always leads to advancement for everyone else. Low curbs for wheelchairs are used more often for strollers or bicycles.

I worked at a Disney hotel in Anaheim for a number of years and they maintained a TTY machine to provide accessibility just in case, we were all trained to use it. In all of the years I worked there (almost up to the beginning of the pandemic) I only saw it used once. I had always wondered why it hadn’t been phased out in favor of texting until it rang one time and that one time made it necessary.

I’m a hearing person and don’t get me wrong- I love and am thankful for my ability to hear… but it shocks me when people are surprised that I prefer to read information. Yep, I always have CC on, and am perfectly happy watching tv/tiktok without audio.

And that is why we have the football huddle because of Gallaudet University’s football team.

occasionally I still use my cell phone TTY setting. But it's rare. I still know people who rely on it.

I remember learning the asl sign for sidekick (the phone model) and my professor talked about how she and her friends thought it was the best designed phone for the deaf community at the time (she was deaf, it was pretty full immersion for a 101 course)

Instead of our parents dragging us to knock on their friends doors they now just drag us into the room to say hi to their friends on ft. (Now it conditioned me to be nosy and I have to see whos she talking to??!)

Grateful for accessibility and deaf people ♥️. I do not enjoy phone calls unless I am close with the person.

Not hearing people being like “I want to do that” but then denying us access with interpreters or other accessibility 😭😭

I ASSUMED it had something to do with deaf people but I had no idea how far back it went! This is amazing to learn!

I remember when the Sidekick came out in the Harris Communications catalog. It was $400! And of course, your friends had to be able to afford it too. So we didn’t get it right away. But I specifically remember seeing that revolutionary solution in the same catalog we used to order doorbells and alarm clicks and such.

I used the TTY exclusively in the 2000s, I don’t miss it but it was crucial for me to be able to call my mom
