@thesomaticdiary_: Let’s talk about movies that are more shocking than the books on which they’re based. Again, because I can’t seem to let things go, the criticism surrounding Emerald Fennell’s upcoming Wuthering Heights adaptation has got me thinking about other movies based on books. And I feel like a lot of the most enduring adaptations have actually been a lot more shocking than their source material. I think it’s because we have to understand reading and viewing are very different things. To elicit the same kind of emotional response that we’ve imagined in reading, directors have to amp up the visuals. I’m a fan of shock value when it does a good job of making me feel something. It could even be an awful feeling, a disturbed feeling, a disgusted feeling, but if it tells the story well, I’m into it. ##books##movies##wutheringheights##theshining##dracula1992
Fascinating topic and what a great survey! Interpretation is such a precious thing, gets right to what's open in a work...or runs straight from it 😅. Lynch's Dune will always be absolutely for me.

monika :
gratuitous sex scenes are lazy storytelling. and most of the movies you listed are horror movies, so it’s hard to compare. and i think wuthering heights was unusual in its day which is why it created so much controversy, whereas every other movie has shock value nowadays
