Ursula Assaid was murdered on September 25, 1982. She was subjected to 55 hours of continuous torture at the hands of her mother's boyfriend, Donald McDougall. Both McDougall, and Ursula's mother, Susan Assaid, prevented Ursula from eating or drinking. They also denied her sleep. Ursula Assaid was murdered on September 25, 1982. She was subjected to 55 hours of continuous torture at the hands of her mother's boyfriend, Donald McDougall. Both McDougall, and Ursula's mother, Susan Assaid, prevented Ursula from eating or drinking. They also denied her sleep. McDougall forced Ursula to march around the house for hours with soiled underwear on her head. The only food she was given was "soap sandwiches," which consisted of two pieces of bread with sliced bar soap in between. Starting in the early morning, McDougall made Ursula stand outside naked in a suitcase, without food or water, and forbade her from going to the bathroom. If Ursula happened to wet herself, McDougall beat her, and then forced her to march again while repeatedly saying the alphabet. If Ursula hesitated or missed a letter, McDougall whipped or punched her. On the night of Ursula's death, McDougall punched her in the ribs and ordered her to stand at he and Susan's bedside. Then, he made her march around naked as he beat her with a belt. After a particularly intense beating, Ursula was submerged in a sink full of ice because she complained about being thirsty. As the ice melted, it stung her bruised and bloodied skin. Over the entirety of her daughter's torture, Susan Assaid stood by and did nothing. Toward the end, Ursula bled from her mouth and walked "like she had cerebral palsy." Susan later told investigators that McDougall "seemed very satisfied" at the sight of Ursula's condition. Afterwards, McDougall went outside for a walk. Susan went into the bathroom to pick Ursula up off the bathroom floor. She carried Ursula into the kitchen, where she was planning to feed her some gelatin. On the walk from the bathroom to the kitchen, Ursula died in her mother's arms. McDougall returned from his walk to find Susan crying over Ursula's death. He picked Ursula's body up, kissed and hugged her, said he was sorry, then put her back on the floor. Susan suggested getting rid of Ursula's body. They put her in a duffle bag and tied two 8-pound weights to her waist. Together, they waded into a retention pond, tossed the duffle bag in, and watched it sink. As Susan and McDougall walked back to their house, he put his arm around her, reminded her she was pregnant with his child, and said he would make it up to her. As time went on and neighbors asked where Ursula was, Susan told them she was with her father. Ursula's decomposed body was not found in the pond until December 1982 after Susan went to the police and told them what happened. Susan and McDougall were both charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse. In March 1983, Susan pleaded guilty to manslaughter and agreed to testify against McDougall. She was sentenced to 15 years in prison. In November 1983, McDougall was found guilty of second-degree murder and sentenced to 34 years in prison. In January 1984, a judge ordered that Susan and McDougall's baby be put up for adoption. Susan ultimately served five years of her 15-year sentence for manslaughter. It was later determined that at least 89 people knew Ursula was being abused but did nothing. McDougall was found dead in prison in October 1996. Though an official cause of death was not provided, sources confirmed a fellow inmate had killed him.
