At the park today, waiting for some friends, I was just recording my son riding around on his bike. I caught this. A completely innocent question from a 7 year old that stopped me in my tracks: “Mum why do people stare at Lilly?” Because he notices. He notices when people look at his sister for longer than they should. He notices when people look at her wheelchair before they look at her. And because he loves her, he notices when those looks feel uncomfortable. The thing is, children don't automatically see disability as something strange. They see their sister. Their brother. Their friend. Their person. We teach them what “different” means. So when he asks me why people stare, what do I tell him? That they're curious? That they don't know what to say? That they don't mean anything by it? Maybe sometimes that's true. But there's also a really important difference between noticing someone and making them feel like they're on display. And I explained this after reflecting on my answer…. Disabled people shouldn't have to exist in public knowing they're being watched, judged or discussed. And I don't want my son growing up thinking that his sister is someone the world is entitled to stare at. She isn't something to look at. She's someone to know. ❤️ Maybe this is the conversation we need to have more of. Not teaching disabled people to make themselves smaller or less noticeable… But teaching everyone else to look beyond the wheelchair and see the person. #DisabilityAwareness #DisabilityParenting #SiblingLife #DisabledChildren #Inclusion
