The man who built the Sultan's giant gun first offered his services to Constantinople. His name was Urban, a Hungarian engineer. In the summer of 1452, the emperor couldn't pay what he asked. He couldn't even give him the bronze. So Urban went to the young Sultan Mehmed II and told him his gun could blast the walls of Babylon. Mehmed paid him four times what he wanted. His first gun sank a Venetian ship in the Bosphorus. His second was twice the size: a bronze barrel of about eight metres, with seven hundred men to serve it. Before the test, the whole town was warned not to panic. The stone ball flew about a mile and buried itself six feet in the ground. Sixty oxen dragged it to Constantinople, where it could fire only seven times a day. It broke down in May, was repaired, and kept firing. On the last morning of the siege, one of its balls brought down the defenders' barricade. Hours later, Mehmed's army took the city.
