@peakcollectives: Baby Southern Cassowary. The southern cassowary is one of the most extraordinary and prehistoric-looking birds on Earth, often called the “guardian of the rainforest.” Towering at up to 6 feet tall, it is covered in coarse, black, hair-like feathers that give it a rugged, almost reptilian look. Its most striking features are the brilliant blue skin on its neck and head, vivid red wattles hanging down the throat, and the tall bony casque, or helmet, atop its head. This casque helps the bird move through dense forest and may also play a role in sound resonance. Despite its beauty, the cassowary is also known as one of the most dangerous birds in the world. With powerful legs armed with dagger-like claws, it can defend itself fiercely if threatened. Yet in its natural rainforest habitat of northern Australia and New Guinea, it plays a vital role as a seed disperser, swallowing large fruits whole and spreading their seeds across the forest floor. The southern cassowary is both majestic and intimidating—a living relic of ancient times, embodying the wild, untamed power and mystery of the tropical rainforest. #wildlife #nature #foryou #trending #viral @National Geographic
