@mateenq2: Why do engineers require steel rebar in concrete columns. It seems unnecessary since columns work in compression and we mainly need steel reinforcement in columns to be able to make up for concrete being weak in tension. When engineers are designing things for the real world we need to take into account many different loading scenarios that could occur. This includes unbalanced forces that could be acting on columns which would introduce tensile stresses. Steel also is stronger than concrete in compression so rebar improves its axial capacity in compression. There are many other reasons but these are just some of the main ones. #engineering #construction #structuralengineering #civilengineering #engineeringstudent
