In contemporary times, the term Hafidh is often used to refer to a person who has memorized the Qur’an and possesses a good and beautiful voice. However, during the era of classical scholars such as Imam Abu `Amr al-Dani (may Allah have mercy on him), Imam al-Shatibi (may Allah have mercy on him), and Imam Ibn al-Jazari (may Allah have mercy on him), the term Hafidh referred to a person who had comprehensive knowledge of the Qur’an, the Qira’at, Fiqh, Hadith, and also al-Fara’id. According to some scholars, a Hafidh is a person who has memorized more than a thousand Ahadith.
