OBS is awesome at screen recording / audio recording. It's open source, small, lean, and free. For editing videos look at DaVinci Resolve, also free and amazing.

I bought MicroFocus COBOL once upon a time. Mid nineties I think. Very nearly learnt it in order to get a job. Luckily got into web dev though

i love that "user drops the punch cards" is a design consideration 😁

DEC/HP/HPE/VSI OpenVMS COBOL which I have used since 95 with some code from the 80s almost doesn't care although a compiler switch will go back to punch card style. * goes in column 1 and \A or is it /A for conditional compilation

I think I'll do my vibe coding in COBOL

Industry-standard, IBM Punch Cards were 80-columns wide, so columns 73-80 are the mythical bonus area that you are talking about.

I use Cobol at work, but were starting to transition off of it and I know I'll miss it when it's gone

I've never seen anything COBOL before I saw your video the other day, so thank you for going back to basics!

as a software dev with... erm... modern language benefits, it's incredible to put into perspective how far we've come over around 70 years

RE: sequence numbers - a CS prof told me back in punch card days a good diagonal marker line down the stack helped if you played punch-card pickup...
p.s. great series so far!

OBS isn’t necessarily the easiest, but it is free and open source, and it could do all the screen grabbing and such.

Most of my COBOL bugs were because I'd strayed into column 73...

I’m not a COBOL programmer but I do a lot of RPG programming and even though I try to be modern and program in “modern” environments, my bread and butter has been being able to read and code on programs that are very old.

we used to put our userid in the identification area . so we could hunt down who wrote it and make fun of them (or ask them questions)

"for backwards compatibility" considering backwards compatibility is primary reason people use COBOL today that sounds important.

Was at a friend’s stag a few years back. Was all a bit too mad for me, but his dad was there, who I found out was a cobol programmer back in the day. Spent most of the time talking to him about it. Wish I didn’t drink as much so I could remember more of what he said, haha.
