I think both Dragon and Akainu are the same , they have a strong sense of justice, but Akainu is the ultimate marine and his true enemy is the pirates and he doesn't care about the world government that much other than that they are fueling and funding his ambition, unlike Dragon who doesn't see pirates as the true enemy, probably to Akainu its like how can you betray me like this when we were supposed to get rid of these pirates who steal and kill, just look at what the pirates did to countries like Alabasta and Dressrosa.

I understood that differently. To me he didn’t really cover for him but instead lied to net get into trouble himself. We can see in the chapter that dragons platoon was wiped out as punishment for dragon defying orders. The one who lied I assume was someone who did the killing but he noticed dragon himself was not among them so if the other one who has a higher rank noticed it he probably would’ve gotten himself into trouble because he would be blamed for letting dragon escape
