42 years ago, Nigeria lost one of its most remarkable cultural icons. Ladi Kwali was born in Kwali, present-day Abuja, where she learned the traditional Gbagyi art of pottery from her aunt. What began as a community craft soon became an internationally recognised art form. Her exceptional talent caught the attention of the Emir of Abuja and later British potter Michael Cardew, who established the Abuja Pottery Training Centre in the 1950s. Rather than abandoning her traditional techniques, Kwali combined them with modern ceramic methods, creating distinctive vessels decorated with Gbagyi-inspired patterns. Her work was eventually exhibited across Britain, Europe and the United States. Her achievements earned her several honours, including an MBE in 1963 and an honorary doctorate in 1977. And today, millions of Nigerians still see her face on the ₦20 note. But Ladi Kwali’s legacy is bigger than the banknote. She helped show the world that Nigerian craftsmanship, traditions and artistic knowledge could stand on the global stage without losing their identity. A Gbagyi potter from Kwali who became one of Nigeria’s most celebrated artists. 🇳🇬 Sources: British Museum, Central Bank of Nigeria, Victoria and Albert Museum #BeyondNaija #LadiKwali #NigerianHistory #Gbagyi #NigerianCulture AfricanHistory NigerianArt Pottery AfricanArt Abuja NigeriaHistory Heritage WomenInHistory
