I would use wall paper on a out door wood u will get moisture I would put a heavy coat of shellac it’s not gonna last very long if you don’t

mineral oil from the pharmacy would be a great choice. I used it on some shipping boxes turned planter. 2 years outside, filled and they are still in good shape. its super cheap and will keep the wood from drying and absorbing water. go extra thick on joints so it will keep in.
