Their gaping mouths, stubby fins, and mottled patterning suggest that these fish prefer to lurk and wait —until their prey swims too close, that is.⁠ ⁠ Scientists believe that fangtooth fish rely on an excellent sense of touch instead of their eyesight. The pronounced dark line down their sides is a lateral line that senses even small movements around them.⁠ ⁠ MBARI researchers have spotted a fangtooth, on average, less than once every two years since we opened our doors, making this fish almost as elusive as it is astonishing.
