@thinkingcanine: Often, resource guarding between two dogs is created by the dog owner. Things I see include people feeding dogs from the same dish, feeding dogs in bowls left out all day, and feeding dogs right next to each other as a flex. We have two dogs who are what people call ‘bullet proof’. They are perfect. We would never do this with them. They can eat near each other but we stand in between them. We want them to stay healthy and happy so we give them the separation they need to stay that way. They sometimes will run inside and both start drinking water out of the same bowl at the same time but that is their own choice.

I have never understood the mentality even behind the one big bowl the dogs just eat out of. I had a boarding client with three dogs who just said the dogs take turns eating whenever they are hungry & they just top the bowl up whenever it is empty. I had to explain that would not work in my house as all dogs but my own are crated when fed & my own dogs would consume the food instantly. No surprise though 2 of the 3 dogs were very overweight. 🙃
