What to Do: Fill a glass all the way to the top with water. Seriously, fill it up! Quickly place a fine mesh strainer over the top of the glass. Place your palm flat on the strainer, covering the glass opening. Flip the whole thing over quickly! Remove your hand and prepare to be amazed. The water stays in the glass! You can even move it around, and it still won't fall out. The Science Behind the Fun: It looks like magic, but it’s all about two simple physics concepts: air pressure and surface tension. When you flip the glass, the air outside pushes up on the strainer, which is stronger than the water's weight pushing down. The water's surface also acts like a thin, stretchy film (surface tension) that seals the tiny holes in the strainer. Together, these two forces hold the water in the glass. When you remove the glass, you let air rush in from the top. This balances the pressure, and gravity takes over, causing the water to fall out.
