@ellierebecca123: The Count of Monte Cristo: first impressions. The more I read of this the better it gets! #literature #classicliterature #thecountofmontecristo @Penguin Classics #books
The beauty of The Count of Monte Cristo is that it doesn’t hand you neat answers. It dramatizes the mess. Every character’s downfall is a case study in how personal interest corrodes justice.
1) Philosophers sometimes distinguish causal responsibility (who physically acted) from moral responsibility (who intended and foresaw the outcome). Here, both bear responsibility, but Danglars is guilty of a colder, more premeditated malice.
2) Absolute objectivity in ethics might be a fantasy. This gets into the idea of conflicts of interest. So the question isn’t “can we be objective?” but “how do we set up systems that check our human inability to be objective?”
3) In the novel, death is used less as justice than as a tool of power. Dumas is staging the horror of letting flawed men decide who lives and dies. The story forces us to ask: if vengeance and justice blur this easily, can any mortal truly wield the death penalty without slipping into tyranny?

Colton Thornton :
Probably my favorite book I’ve read. It covers so many themes and had something relatable to everyone.

I am 62 pages into it. These questions are important, but I started reading because of revenge. I am wondering if I really find this issue there.

I have to admit to my eternal shame I got halfway through it and put it down. I’m just finishing east of Eden so I need some encouragement to pick it back up
