@appleinsiderofficial: Why is Apple’s new 40W Dynamic Power Adapter for iPhone 17 so special?! There’s nothing else like it! #apple #iphone #iphone17 #iphone17pro #appleevent
Electrical engineer here. A normal PD charger negotiates between several preset voltages between the device and the charger. Higher power outputs need higher voltages as the cable is limited to 5A. What this seems to be doing is allowing that voltage to change arbitrarily. The device would need to support this for faster charging but it could result in better efficiency and less heat. It appears this charger also has different pulsed and sustained ratings that the new spec enables.

Wait a minute so you need to buy exactly this adapter for a fast charge? I’m sorry, but Apple should be punished by customers. They gone too far with this game.

So is this okay for my battery of an 17 Pro Max to use this every day? Or should i stick with the 20W?

Honestly can’t see how this is going to do anything my USB-C laptop charger doesn’t do.

I initially thought that it just means it can charge your phone at 60W for a short amount of time just until it gets to around 50% and then it’ll taper off to 40W just like DC Fast charging a EV.

Just saw a twitter thread about this and there’s already chinese manufacturers on it so it won’t be too long but yeah it’s cool that they’re still “first to market” on SOMETHING at least (also will this block be supplied with the new iPhones or is sold exclusively separately?)

USB pd has existed for years, up to 100+watts, even on phones. This is just apple ripping you off as always. Zero reason for any of their previous pd chargers not to fast charge this phone as well.

So why didn't they just use a PPS charger? Those have a more granular voltage and current control and are actually designed for phones, whereas AVS is meant more for high power devices like hubs or monitors. It feels like pure marketing just so they can say that they were the first.

So I have a 45W usb-c charger, used for my S20 and S22 Ultra. I’m getting the 17 Pro Max. Will that continue to fast charge? It works great on my 15 Pro right now
